In the early 90s, a San Diego based company, Signs & Glassworks, Inc., was developing cards for the premium baseball card market. SGW printed up sheets of proposed chrome cards for a meeting with Upper Deck, using the existing 1991 Upper Deck Silver Sluggers cards for their prototypes. One sheet included Barry Bonds, Dave Parker, Jose Canseco, Matt Williams, Rickey Henderson, Cecil Fielder, Alan Trammel, Lance Parrish, Julio Franco and Ellis Burks. Supposedly, the Upper Deck meeting did not go well, with SGW shifting gears afterwards and targeting a pitch to Topps instead. The patented technology found its way later in the groundbreaking 1993 Topps Finest set, and the refractor inserts.
